A Great American Hero Has Died

“No, no, oh dear God, no”, I gasped, standing in shock staring at the TV that I was walking past in my kitchen when the news it aired stopped me in my tracks. A hand reflexively flew towards my mouth to stifle a sob as the tears fell from my eyes when my little boy came to my side and asked, “What’s wrong mommy? Are you sad? Do you need a tissue?” I looked down at my sweet little four year old and, after taking a deep breath, I told him, “One of America’s Greatest Heroes has died” and my son hugged me and then ran to bring me some tissues.

Andrew Breitbart, one of America’s Greatest Heroes, a true warrior for ‘truth justice and the American way’, died today. He was married and had four young children. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends, and all who loved and admired him. My words feel so small and insufficient to pay proper tribute to such a great Hero. Below are links to reactions from my friends and fellow bloggers, some of who were blessed to have known him, all of whom admired him as I did. He was a brave, bold, and beautiful man. May Andrew Breitbart Rest In Peace and may his legacy live through us all.

Larry Solov broke the terrible news to us from Andrew’s Big Government/Journalism/Hollywood/Peace sites:

With a terrible feeling of pain and loss we announce the passing of Andrew Breitbart.

Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.

We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.

Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.

Andrew recently wrote a new conclusion to his book, Righteous Indignation:

I love my job. I love fighting for what I believe in. I love having fun while doing it. I love reporting stories that the Complex refuses to report. I love fighting back, I love finding allies, and—famously—I enjoy making enemies.

Three years ago, I was mostly a behind-the-scenes guy who linked to stuff on a very popular website. I always wondered what it would be like to enter the public realm to fight for what I believe in. I’ve lost friends, perhaps dozens. But I’ve gained hundreds, thousands—who knows?—of allies. At the end of the day, I can look at myself in the mirror, and I sleep very well at night.

Andrew is at rest, yet the happy warrior lives on, in each of us.

Shortly after the news of Andrew Breitbart’s death tore into my heart from the TV in my kitchen which was tuned to Fox News, Bill Hemmer interviewed Jonah Goldberg, it was heartbreaking to see Jonah in such shock and sadness – he had only found out that Andrew passed away just a few moments before the interview. Jonah writes about that moment and the tragic loss of his dear friend at the National Review. (excerpt)

There will be lots of eulogies and obituaries for Andrew, including my own, talking about his politics and his beautiful wife and kids and his bottomless happy-warrior spirit. And that’s all true and right and appropriate. But people — particularly NRO readers — should know that Andrew’s accomplishments didn’t begin with his relatively recent fame and his gonzo antics. People will talk a lot about Shirley Sherrod and Anthony Weiner and that’s all fine and good. He’d like it, in fact. But he was a great, sweet, smart guy destined for great things long before he became a cultural touchstone. Indeed, his greatest accomplishment, I’m sure he would say, was marrying up and having four wonderful kids. And that too is something that you won’t see in his clips on YouTube.   RTWT

At iOwnTheWorld, Mr. Pinko posted the news, the reactions of the heartbroken (including mine) are in the comments section there.

I called Robert Stacy McCain shortly after I’d heard the news because I knew he has been on the road and was not likely to be near a TV or internet connection; he had already heard about it and he shared some of his memories of Andrew with me. Stacy is currently dealing with a family emergency, but he did manage to get online to post to his blog:

He may have been the greatest genius I’ve ever met, with a keen, intuitive mind. Although he had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder — he had a freewheeling quality about him, and his schedule was quite improvisational – Breitbart was also capable of a laser-like focus on whatever subject captured his interest. There were times you’d be talking to him and, if that spark of passionate interest hit, his luminous blue eyes would glow with an intensity that was almost frightening.

Andrew was 10 years younger than me. I’d known him for five years. His death reminded me of the 2007 death of John Berthoud of the American Taxpayers Union who, like Andrew, generously gave of his time and knowledge to help build the liberty movement.

I’m sure I’ll have updates later, and regret that I’m not in a position to do more blogging about this tragic loss today, but as I said: There is never a good time for bad things to happen.

R.I.P., Andrew.    READ MORE HERE

Bob Belvedere at the Camp Of  The Saints: Our Sam Adams Has Died: Andrew Breitbart

GOP Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum issued this statement in a press release on the passing of Andrew Breitbart:

“I am stunned by the news of Andrew’s passing.  Andrew was a revolutionary voice and energetic advocate for conservatism across the country.  What separated Andrew from most was his courage to stand up to the liberal elite while living in the lion’s den itself.  He was never afraid to stand up for what was right, even when he knew he would be attacked for it.  This is a significant loss, not just for conservatism, but for keeping our media and our leaders accountable.  My wife Karen and I will keep Andrew’s family and his loved-ones in our thoughts and prayers.”

DaTechguy has a beautiful tribute post to Andrew Breitbart’s life and legacy with pictures, videos, and lots of updates with reactions from many of the people whose lives were touched by Our Great Hero Andrew Breitbart.

Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch writes:

Andrew Breitbart passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last night. The forces of truth have lost a great and courageous warrior. Unlike most on the Right, he was not a cringing dhimmi eagerly throwing his comrades under the bus in a futile attempt to appease the Left. I hope that his lasting legacy will be legions of freedom fighters confronting Leftists and Islamic supremacists on their hypocrisy, lies and justifications for evil with just as much fearlessness, verve and good humor as he always displayed.

May his memory be eternal.

Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs expresses her sorrow at this truly enormous loss:

I just heard the terrible news that Andrew Breitbart has passed away. I mourn deeply on a personal level. My thoughts and prayers are with his wonderful wife and children. What a profound loss.

Andrew was our warrior, our leader. Fearless, unapologetic, brilliant. I admire few, but Andrew was in a league of his own. His herculean contribution to the war is incalculable.

This is a profound loss.

Pamela also posted this beautiful picture of her with Andrew:

Nice Deb has big and wonderful tribute post roundup with lots of links and videos HERE and a video of Andrew Breitbart, the “Man Against the Mob”, HERE.

Mike at Cold Fury correctly predicted the disgusting bile that would issue forth from evil people who rejoice in the death of a good man who they could never ever intimidate no matter how hard they tried:

Get ready to see some truly despicable celebration from the humane, civil, tolerant Left.

This is not a loss the cause of liberty and Constitutional government can easily sustain. Terrible, terrible news, for all of us who care about this nation and wish to see its misguided course corrected.

Update! Annnnd what’d I say. You can set your watch by these scum. How is it that people who are so quick to extol their broad-mindedness and nonconformist, unconventional thinking are so tiresomely predictable? But then again, there’s this, from Josh Trevino: “You wish to honor the man? Then take up his sword and fight as he did.” To the last man, the last breath, and the last drop of blood. Preferably theirs.   MORE HERE

The hateful leftist ghouls are clicking their hoovesgleefully over Andrew Breitbart’s death, because they have no souls and are incapable of any semblance of decency, compassion, or humanity in their cruel black hearts.

Richard McEnroe at Three Beers Later answers the leftist vitriol:

This is a devastating blow to Andrew’s family, and if you read Matty Yglesias:

or the obscene comments on Twitter, or the Yahoo! article about his death, you realize the ‘progressive, caring’ movement recognizes this as a signal victory for their cause.

Erich Boehlert of Media Matters for America. who has spent literally years championing and organizing the online hate campaign against Andrew Breitbart, is now oozing pious “we disagreed about many things but this is a sad thing” claptrap, but the hate continues even without a target… as if Breitbart’s opponents ever needed a reason to hate.

Well, they’re right.  This is a loss for us, and for anyone who values freedom and human dignity.  But we’re already carrying the load for the GOP, we can shoulder this burden as well.  There was one Andrew Breitbart.  There are millions of us.   READ THE REST

Jim Hoft at The Gateway Pundit mourns his friend and shares his memories and photos:

Andrew was a conservative hero and true American patriot. He was generous with his time. He was a devoted friend. He was the definition of raw courage.

I first met Andrew Breitbart in 2007 on our trip to Israel where we met with Benjamin Netanyahu.

Seated: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Scott Johnson from Power Line in the background. Standing (l-r) Andrew Breitbart- Breitbart.com and The Drudge Report, Andrew’s great friend Laurence Solov, Jeff Emanuel from RedState and myself. We travelled Israel as guests of America’s Voices and Voices for Israel organizations.

Andrew leaves behind a wife and four children.

Andrew Breitbart spoke at a conference for black conservatives last August in St. Louis. I ran into Andrew after the banquet for this picture.  MUCH MORE HERE

Also at The Gateway Pundit, Jim reports that Andrew Breitbart was Remembered on the Floor of Congress today and post the video of it.

The Lonely Conservative has a video of Andrew Breitbart’s recent CPAC speech, along with links to reactions from both the right and the hateful left HERE, and a guest post honoring Andrew Breitbart by Joseph Hall HERE.

Via The Lonely Conservative, here are links to two very insightful posts:

Dan Collins at The Conservatory writes about Andrew Breitbart’s side of the story concerning rotten allegations by Glenn Beck (I largely stopped paying attention to Beck after he disgustingly referred to the Dutch hero for free speech and against jihad, Geert Wilders, as a “fascist” a few years ago), and lots more links.

From the Desk of Lady Liberty had a similar reaction to the news that I did, she was behind the wheel a the time and needed to pull off of the road as the shock and the tears came.

Bill Quick at Daily Pundit weighs in:

I wish I didn’t live in a society where the first, involuntary thought that crossed my mind upon reading this was “Natural causes? Sure….”

Based on no evidence whatsoever, of course. But that’s what I thought.

And now I’ll have to listen to the howls of glee from the left, on top of everything else.

RIP, Andrew. You were a terrific inspiration to all of us.   RTR

Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit has more links and an important reminder for the next time the malicious left howls about how allegedly vicious we on the right are.

William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection posted A personal note on the death of Andrew Breitbart.

Dan Riehl has a beautiful post honoring Andrew Breitbart:

Andrew Breitbart Loves Today

Wherever he is and whatever he is doing, my boss, colleague and friend Andrew Breitbart is loving today. His name is in so many headlines. One sensed he lived his life as an activist for that. But to think that that was all he and it was about is to misunderstand him and underestimate his complexity. Andrew is a man who loved, far more than he hated, assuming he genuinely hated anything.

What Andrew understood and embraced as a conservative media activist was that, when his name was in the headlines, it was because he was battling for what he most believed in. He also knew that his enemies, the headline writers in many ways, were engaged – and he was fighting. Andrew, like so many of us, lived for that fight. He understood how necessary it was for the right to engage it.

It’s significant that Andrew picked his battlefields as a brave and fearless man. When you are fighting what many conservatives believe to be a biased media in their headlines, you are fighting them on their turf, not retreating, surrendering, or simply musing off in your own little protected, right-leaning corner of the media world.

Andrew Breitbart gave his opponents every advantage by engaging them as he did. And he often beat them.   THERE IS MUCH MORE, READ IT ALL

RidesAPaleHorse from Death By 1000 Papercuts sent me the powerful graphic below to use in this post:

Rest In Peace, Andrew Breitbart, may your light shine eternally in all of our hearts.

UPDATE: Even here, where my policy about nasty comments is clearly posted, the jackasses cannot resist. I will still remove them from my comments section, but now I’ll post the hate right here for everyone’s enjoyment:

The world is a better place without Breitbart.

I will post every single nasty comment made in the thread below up here for all to see, so keep on revealing yourselves, dumbasses.
